Depression Therapy At My TMS

My TMS, a leader in depression treatment, offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive, FDA approved, outpatient therapy for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Did You Know?

More than 16 million Americans suffer from major depressive disorder (MDD). MDD is the leading cause of disability in the United States.

Depression leads to an array of symptoms that can affect the way a person thinks, feels and acts. Along with feelings of sadness and hopelessness, depressive symptoms can also include changes in sleep, appetite and energy as well as a loss of interest in previously enjoyed hobbies or activities.

These persistent symptoms last for a minimum of two weeks, making it difficult to complete daily tasks and maintain relationships as usual. Depression is ongoing — but treatable.

Depression has become so common and well-known, that there are now many different treatment options, and one of them is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

You might feel like you’re out of options if your medications aren’t helping reduce symptoms of depression, but you’re not. TMS therapy can be the best solution for treatment-resistant depression.

What Is TMS?

Depression is usually treated with either medication, talk therapy or a combination of the two. For some, these standard treatments aren’t effective, potentially indicating the presence of treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, safe, and effective procedure for depression that is used when other treatments, such as medication and psychotherapy, aren’t successful. This FDA-approved treatment for depression uses magnetic fields to stimulate the area of the brain thought to be responsible for mood disorders.

This area, which is called the prefrontal cortex, tends to be underactive when someone is experiencing depressive episodes. By delivering focused magnetic pulses to the prefrontal cortex, TMS can help generate an electric current in the brain and cause the area’s neurons to begin firing. Stimulating this area can restore normal function, reducing symptoms and improving emotional judgment and mood.

TMS is clinically proven to be effective, and it does not produce the systemic side effects that are common with other therapies like antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Also, unlike ECT, patients will remain awake throughout the entire TMS treatment.

Our Services

There are two types of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Deep TMS and Repetitive TMS. My TMS offers both! While they each stimulate the brain’s prefrontal cortex (the area associated with depression) equally, there are slight administration differences between them.

Both types of TMS are effective and covered by most insurances! The choice is simply based on patient preference!

MagStim Repetitive TMS (rTMS)

Location: Hollywood, Oakland Park, South Miami, and Boca Raton Florida

Repetitive TMS (rTMS) is the original form of TMS treatment and remains a gold standard for depression care. Magstim’s rTMS machine uses a state-of-the-art stim-guide to visualize the brain’s target area on a computer screen before administering impulses. This machine can conduct 3-minute treatment sessions for people who are on-the-go and appreciate the interactive technology!

BrainsWay’s Deep TMS (dTMS)

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Like rTMS, Deep TMS (dTMS) targets the specific area of the brain associated with depression; however, it also stimulates some of the brain’s crucial surrounding regions with expanded depth and width ranges. Deep TMS decreases the chance of targeting error and may be better for those who have a harder time sitting still, have a history of neck or back pain, or want to sit back and enjoy the process. This machine can conduct 10-20 minute sessions.

What to Expect From TMS Treatment for Depression

TMS depression treatment is available in South Florida by prescription only. Under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist, you’ll receive 30-36 consecutive sessions that can be up to 20 minutes in length.

During this time, you’ll be able to sit comfortably while the TMS device delivers its magnetic pulses. Since you’ll be alert and awake, you’ll be able to read, listen to music, watch TV or just relax during each treatment.

The entire treatment is noninvasive and pain-free. You can expect to hear a clicking sound and feel a gentle tapping sensation on your scalp while the cycle is in progress.

Then, once your TMS treatment is complete, you’ll be able to go back to your usual routine and activities.
